Vancouver session to share tips for growing spuds at home

To many people, potatoes are something they pick up in the produce department of their favourite grocery store or market, but an upcoming activity will show how easy it can be to grow them at home.

The West End Community Centre Association in Vancouver has made plans to offer a session that will introduce tips and tricks for growing potatoes. There are many varieties in the trade to choose from, ranging from humble russets all the way to cultivars that boast red or even blue tubers.

During the class, attendees will find out how they can grow potatoes in a home garden bed or grow bag, and fertilizing and harvesting are both on the agenda for discussion. Tips for insect control and variety selection will be shared, and each participant will go home with a “seed” potato they can cut up and plant on their own. The community seed library will be on site, and everyone is welcome to bring along some seeds to share or swap.

Offering an introduction to a hobby often generates public interest in the activity. Materials for marketing these sorts of events can be obtained from a local poster printing company.

This introduction to the art and science of growing potatoes is scheduled for March 15th. The Barclay Room at the West End Community Center well be the venue for the two-hour workshop.
