Vancouver planning icy swim to kick off 2020

Following their New Year’s Eve celebrations, many Vancouver residents may be looking forward to sleeping in the next day. An intrepid bunch has other plans, and will be taking a chilly plunge to ring in 2020.

The annual Polar Bear Swim that takes place in the icy waters of English Bay is one of the largest in the world, and it has become a cherished local tradition. It is anticipated that a crowd that numbers in the thousands will show up on the day of the activity, and many will be decked out in a funny costume for the occasion.

The bathers are scheduled to hit the water starting at 2:30 pm, and while it is expected that many will just run in and immediately run back out screaming and shivering, some will choose to brave the cold and take pare in the Peter Pantages Memorial swim, spanning 100 yards. Even if they do not wish to jump in, members of the public are welcome to attend and cheer the bathers on.
