Vancouver kids to forage for edible plants

Vancouver is located in an area considered to be temperate rain forest, and an activity for kids to enjoy with a parent or guardian will introduce some of its edible native plants.

The woods in British Columbia’s coastal area boast many edible species that can be easy to find and identify, and kids from ages 5 to 13 will be able to learn more about them when they participate in an in-person outdoor activity. The event is intended for children who are registered with the NatureKids BC program, but members of the general public are permitted to attend one of its functions before becoming a member.

The learners in the outing will visit a variety of sites, and as they go, the facilitator from the Ecology Centre will point out any edible plants they encounter along the way. These may include species such as salmon berry, western hemlock and licorice fern.

Kids often enjoy learning about the world around them, and outdoor workshops like this give them an opportunity to do so. Offering the participants in these sorts of activities basic field guides can make it easier for them to identify what they see, and these may be produced by area Print shops.

The In Person NatureKids Workshop - Edible Plants Walk will begin at 1:00 pm on April 24th, and face masks are recommended.
