An accelerated fuelling point for electric cars has been installed in Vancouver - a first for the city.
It is hoped that it could make the clean transportation option a viable one for more people. The fast charger, which is located by the Trans Canada Highway at Empire Fields, can charge up electric car is as little as 20 minutes for an 80 percent battery level. It is one of nine that will be situated throughout the city. These, in turn, will be part of the network of 30 that will available throughout the province. Signs can be posted at stations like these to let the public know how to use them and also where the nearest ones can be found so they will know where to go when they need their next top up.
It has been placed so that a person can charge up and be able to drive to the next station without any worry about it running out. It is accessible 24 hours a day, and can be used by SAE, CHAdeMO charging systems, and also the Tesla system, if an adapter is used. It is currently free to use, but according to a spokesperson for the city, it is looking into asking for a minimum $2.00 payment per use, which is comparable to plugging in an electric vehicle at home.
There are currently 250 Level 2 stations around Vancouver and 700 throughout the rest of BC.
