The staff at Vancouver General Hospital have been celebrating after the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation revealed that it has raised a total of $500 million since its inception in 1980.
The Foundation has a history of working to ensure there is funding available for the area’s hospitals, as well as the GF Strong Rehabilitation Center.
This money is used to pay for things which can’t be covered by the government. Through the years, it has been used to improve facilities, purchase vital equipment - including Canada’s first surgical robot - and also to fund a number of research programs.
The money comes from several different streams. Around 70 per cent comes in the form of individual contributions, five per cent from charitable events, eight per cent comes from other fundraising initiatives and the remaining money is raised through investments.
The area’s hospitals play a crucial part in the wellbeing of the community, serving more than 600,000 patents each year. They also provide services such as senior care, palliative care and other home-based health services so people can stay in their properties, where they are most comfortable. The Foundation is, however, constantly looking for ways to improve the services offered.
One of the current initiatives involves the construction of a new mental health center, which will provide in-patient care as well as community-based services.
