Vancouver goes green for 2020

An anonymous gardener is working hard to be part of a growing trend to help make Vancouver a bit greener, one small plot at a time.

The traffic circle where Sixth Avenue and Trafalgar Street meet is now home to Mary’s Garden, a miniature green area where passing pedestrians are invited to stop and pick and handful of fresh herbs to take home. Some passers-by do pick a handful, some stop to take in the wonderful smell of the herbs while others just enjoy the simple beauty of a living garden.

It’s just one of the gardens that have been planted in traffic circles throughout the city and it’s part of a growing trend to bring a little touch of life to the concrete jungle. The mayor of the city hopes that by 2020, Vancouver will proudly sport the label of ‘the greenest city in the world.’

Mary’s Garden, the planting of heritage plum trees and a natural playground are just some of the initiatives that have taken advantage of Vancouver’s Greenest City fund, which has been set up to encourage citizens and businesses take part in the movement.

Companies that provide flyer printing have helped to spread the word to everyone, persuading them that they have a part to play in the effort to bring nature back to the urban landscape.

Hundreds of people have already taken it upon themselves to make the initiative a priority, and if everyone does their part, 2020 should see Vancouver reach its goal.
