Vancouver is home to a colony of nesting Pacific great blue herons, and a guided tour will soon introduce the public to these large wading birds.
Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) Educator Julia Taylor will be leading a visit to the heron’s rookery. Everyone who registers will meet up at the Nature House on Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park, and they should arrive at least 10 minutes ahead of time.
The attendees will be visiting the colony to observe the herons and their chicks, and they can see how they navigate their way through the tree canopy. The site is home to at least 100 nests, and Taylor will share details about how they are constructed. Details about the park’s heron monitoring program and how these birds are protected from predators will round out the session. It is part of the larger “The Herons are Here” initiative.
