Vancouver’s University of British Columbia recently made a commitment to keeping its students safe on campus, and has initiated changes that it hopes will help to ensure it lives up to this goal.
UBC has allocated $1 million in funds, which will be used to help support a variety of initiatives designed to improve student safety.
Approximately 75% of the funding will be used to undertake physical improvements such as brighter lighting, more open landscaping, and ensuring that all walking paths are well lit.
The remainder will be put towards supporting programs like the Alma Mater Society’s “Safe Walk” program, improving the UBC smartphone app, and increasing the number and coverage area of university security’s bike patrols. Its long-term plans include developing educational programs that center around campus safety.
According to RCMP representative Sgt. Drew Grainger, the police fully support these initiatives, and he also noted that they will be working closely with campus security as well as other stakeholders to help to make the campus is as safe as it can be.
All of these improvements came about due to recommendation of a working group that was set up to explore ways that security could be improved.
