More Vancouver residents choosing green local travel

Vancouverites have made the decision to ‘go green’ when moving around the city, with over half of the made utilizing cycling, walking or public transit systems.

Transportation officials recently released data that indicates that while many still make use of their car, many people are choosing the alternatives. The number of trips being made via car is down by nearly 70,000 a year since 2013.

The number made using other ‘self-propelled’ methods – such as walking and biking, and on mass transit – is up by 13,000.

This data means that the city has surpassed its goals that were set under the Greenest City Action Plan of lowering the number of motor vehicle trips by 20 percent.

It is hoped that this news will be useful when planning future improvements and upgrades that will further facilitate the ease and safety of using alternative transport.

The city’s Director of Transportation, Jerry Dobrovolny, remarked that while Vancouver is one of the safest places in North America for bicycle users, more can be done to make it even better. A printing company can produce more signage to be used upon bike routes.

In a companion report that was provided to the council, it was noted that the number of accidents involving bikes has dropped significantly, in relation to the increase in the number of cyclists that has occurred in recent years.
