According to Pat Bell, Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister for British Columbia, bringing in more foreign students creates more jobs. In a speech he gave to the Vancouver Board of Trade, Bell states that the 94,000 current foreign students bring in over $1.25 in economic benefits to the province and have created over 22,000 jobs.
On a recent trade mission to China, British Columbia agreed to accept 2,500 more Chinese students over five years. Bell stated that each student brings “$50,000 a year to B.C.’s economy.” British Columbia currently has other business interest with China including lumber exports and mining agreements.
Having more foreign students will be a boon to local businesses, especially those close to colleges and universities. Businesses can market to those students exclusively by offering items they are comfortable with, like food and clothing. In order to get the word out to those whose business they want, Vancouver companies can design a flyer. Printing a flyer is a low-cost answer to marketing and can be delivered directly to those whose business is wanted. Flyers can either be posted in common areas of the college or university or delivered door to door in dorms.
Foreign students don’t only bring money to spend; they also help to open up minds. The more exposure we all have to different cultures, the better off we will be. Those students from China learn about the larger world, without government interference and then share stories with friends and family back home. It all fosters better international understanding and cooperation which is sadly needed these days.
