Hockey legend celebrates 85th birthday

Fans of the Vancouver Giants hockey team had an extra reason to attend a game last week, as March 1st marked the birthday of much-loved owner and former player Gordie Howe.

Thousands gathered at Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum to wish their hero a happy 85th birthday. One of hockey’s best-known and most loved players, Howe is the only NHL player to have played through five decades; during which he scored 801 goals and 1,049 assists. During his career, he received many accolades, including four Stanley Cups, six Hart trophies, as well as many other honors and awards. He is also a long-standing member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Besides the legions of adoring fans, hockey stars Bobby Hull, Marcel Dionne, Orland Kurtenbach, Charlie Hodge, and Johnny Bower were also in attendance. A beautiful cake, which bore Howe’s number nine, was brought out on to the ice, and entertainer Michael Buble, who co-owns the Giants with Howe, gave a beautiful rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ accompanied by cheers and singing from the crowd.

Many attendees expressed their best wishes on homemade Posters and some even held aloft Signs produced by professional banner printing companies. In honor of his birthday, his team all wore jerseys with their boss’s name and number proudly displayed.

Following the celebrations, the Giants went on to win their game and Howe posed for pictures with hundreds of happy fans. For the fans who have followed Howe throughout his hockey career, it was an unforgettable evening.
