Vancouver’s BC Children’s Center held a news conference last week to launch its campaign to raise $5 million for the construction of a new obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment facility for adolescents and younger children.
The new building will be classed as an OCD Center of excellence and will be the first of its type in the country.
Former NHL goalie and host of Hockey Night in Canada Kelley Hurdley was on hand to help spread the word. The cause is close to his heart, as his youngest daughter has been dealing with this condition for several years.
It is believed that obsessive compulsive disorder affects more than one million Canadians, which means one child in 50 per cent of classrooms across the country may need help. The World Health Organization has gone so far as to call it one of the top 10 debilitating health conditions around the world. People with the affliction often develop unusual obsessive thoughts and feel compelled to perform repetitive motions or actions throughout the day.
The good news is that the condition is highly treatable, and it is in this area that the BC Children’s Center wants to make an impact. Its major goals involve increasing the number of families that it can help, treating young adults, and providing more intensive treatment to those who need it.
One thing than can prove very helpful to families facing such health issues is useful information. Healthcare providers often use the services of brochure printers to create Flyers and Brochures for this very purpose.
