Preparing herbarium sheets were the bane of existence for many students in post-secondary horticultural studies programs of the past. However, an upcoming Vancouver workshop will show how doing this can actually be an enjoyable pastime.
The class will teach the fundamentals of plant pressing and preparing herbarium specimens for display. It will be a hands-on event, with everyone getting a chance to give the techniques a try for themselves.
The participants will learn how to gather plants ethically and, after this, they will be walked through the process of pressing them. They will collect their material from the venue’s garden, before discovering how to properly prepare and label a herbarium sheet. It was explained that these may be useful tools for scientists who study botany and biodiversity. However, they can also be used to create an attractive display.
A continuing education class provides an opportunity for those who are interested in a particular chance to learn even more and may spark an interest in those who are new to a particular practice.
