While related to bees, wasps do not tend to be as welcome in the garden as their more popular cousins, but an upcoming Vancouver activity may show these industrious insects are often misunderstood.
Wasps and hornets, along with bees, ants and sawflies, make up the order of insects known as Hymenoptera. Raven’s Veil will be hosting an evening that may build a greater appreciation for the Vespid family, which includes both hornets and wasps.
The function will combine scientific knowledge with some of the folklore surrounding these insects, and everyone will be able to examine a selection of the nesting material that various species use to build their homes. The behaviour and life cycle of wasps will be explored, and everyone will have a chance to make a paper mâché simulated nest. These may work well to deter a wasp from taking up permanent residence in someone's home.
People are often frightened by what they do not understand, and a workshop like this can help to increase knowledge and reduce fear. A brochure printing company will be able to supply additional learning materials to provide to each attendee.
Raven’s Veil is located at 831 Commercial Drive in Vancouver, and it has scheduled its World of Wasps event for the evening of March 30th. It will begin at 6:00 pm, and tickets are $73.48 each.
