Getting kids interested in the world around them at a young age can help them to develop a lifelong appreciation of science and conservation. Vancouver’s families will be able to put this theory into practice when they participate in a morning of hands-on environmental action.
Parents, guardians and their children from all across the city will be heading to Stanley Park to be a part of this year’s Christmas Bird Count for Kids. It will give everyone who comes out a chance to sharpen their bird ID skills while having some fun in the fresh air.
To help all those who participate a chance to hit the ground running, the morning will kick off with a brief indoor session where the budding ornithologists will sharpen their identification and binocular skills. Next, the group will be divided into smaller teams, each of which will be guided by an experienced birder. The park’s birds will be counted and recorded, and before everyone goes home, they will come together to compare notes and data.
Everyone who is interested in being a part of this activity is reminded to come dressed for the weather, and to bring along a field guide and binoculars if they have them. Tea, hot chocolate and light snacks will be available. This opportunity for area families to lend a hand to some local feathered friends will be offered in the Stanley Park Pavilion in Vancouver. It will begin at 10:00 am.
