Slugs may not be the creature at the top of everybody’s popularity list, but an event is scheduled for the Richmond Nature Park that will shine a light on these humble animals and their place in the environment.
Slugfest will feature a variety of activities that will centre on the role these molluscs play in the ecosystem. There will be an assortment of contests to take part in, including ones for the smallest, heaviest and slimiest of them all. There will also be a Most Beautiful Slug of 2016 competition.
For many, the highlight of the day may well be the Great Richmond Slug Race. This event is always a popular one, with the spectators cheering on their favorites. A Print company can design and produce awards for the winners.
Along with the contests, there will be crafts, a scavenger hunt, games, poetry and a trivia contest. Cecil the Giant Slug will also be on hand for those who wish to have their picture taken with him.
Along with the fun, the day will provide an opportunity to learn more about the value of slugs to the ecosystem. They help to recycle nutrients back to the soil, and are a food source for many other creatures, including turtles, geese, skunks and salamanders.
