Vancouver orchestra to bring classical music to North Shore

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will be holding a special concert in North Vancouver this March, including the performance of works by Mozart.

The concert, marketed as “Mozart Linz Symphony”, features guest conductor and bassoonist Matthieu Lussier, regarded as one of Canada’s top classical musicians. The central piece of the performer is Mozart’s Symphony No. 36, which is also known as the Linz Symphony after the Austrian town it was written in. Other pieces on the programme include Mehul’s “Overture to La chasse du jeune Henri”, a bassoon concerto by Weber, and Farrenc’s “Overture No. 1 in E Minor”. There will be an intermission during the performance with drinks available.

The performance is part of the VSO’s Classical Traditions at the Chan Centre series, which brings the orchestra to North Vancouver. The series also includes a visit by trumpeter Hakan Hardenberger in May. Classical performances such as this, often promoted through methods such as brochure printing and local radio, help to keep traditions alive, as well as offering more modern takes on canonical works of music. The series is also sponsored by the Vancouver Sun.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will perform Mozart’s Linz Symphony and other works at the Centennial Theatre on March 24, with two additional performances taking place at UBC’s Chan Centre on the 25th and 26th.
