The play is a comedy presenting an over-the-top version of a familiar Gothic tale, complete with mystery and supernatural monsters. All roles are played by one of two performers, with many quick changes of wigs and costumes. The play was originally written by Charles Ludlam, and this version is produced by Theatre West Van, with direction by Tom Kavadias and production by Bob Bradley. Promotional material for the show highlights its eccentric inspiration, describing it as:
“A joyful embrace of melodramatic theatre and cinema which borrows freely from Wuthering Heights, Shakespeare, Victorian Penny Dreadfuls and the 1940 film Rebecca.”
The Theatre West Van production will be staged in West Vancouver but look to attract theatre lovers from nearby municipalities such as North Vancouver and New Westminster. Local theatrical productions such as this are used to making the most out of their surroundings, whether it be using brochure printing for programs or finding the creativity in self-imposed on-stage restrictions. Theatre West Van is one of the longest-lasting theatrical groups in the area, staging its first play in 1946.
The West Vancouver production of The Mystery of Irma Vep will take place at the Kay Meek McEwen Theatre from April 14 to 29.
