One of North Vancouver’s biggest marketplaces will be celebrating the lunar, or Chinese, new year in style with a full afternoon of events.
Although typically associated with China, the lunar New Year is also celebrated in countries like Korea and Vietnam. The Vancouver metro area has one of North America’s largest Asian populations, and that influence is certainly reflected at Lonsdale Quay Market through restaurants like the Sizzling Wok and Vinam Vietnamese Cuisine restaurants. The market’s lunar new year celebrations will kick off with a Loong Kong Chicken cooking lesson, presented by Fraser Valley Specialty Poetry.
There will also be performances from traditional Chinese musician Anna Zhou, dancer Jessica Yue, and a group of lion dancers and balloon twisters. This lunar new year will mark the start of the Year of the Rat, traditionally associated with the element of water and the colours of gold, blue, and green. Celebrations will be held all over the world. Celebrations such as this often make use of banner printing and poster printing.
As the calendar is set to the movements of the moon and not the sun, the lunar new year is celebrated on a different day each year. This year’s date falls on January 25, but the Lonsdale Market’s celebration will occur a week later on February 1.
