What's Happening in North Vancouver, BC…

North Vancouver residents plant 100 trees

As part of an initiative to revitalize green spaces across Canada, dozens of North Vanresidents planted over 100 trees in and around Moodyville Park this month.

The event, which took place on the rainy afternoon of last Saturday, was advertised as a “plant and play”, offering children the opportunity to take the park’s new playground for a spin while the grown-ups got to work with shovels.

The playground is mostly constructed from natural wooden materials and has features like a zipline and a bike pump track. The planting was part of an initiative by Tree Canada and CN Rail to plant trees in cities across Canada, to celebrate CN’s 100th anniversary. As part of this project, North Van received a $50, 000 grant to create a legacy forest.

North Vancouver Mayor Linda Buchanan was on hand to celebrate the community event. Buchanan made reference to the city’s origins as a lumber town, describing the revitalization as “poetic”, and also expressed the goal of becoming the healthiest small city in the world. Getting to that goal will require a number of community events and efforts like the one at Moodyville Park. In its aim to create “urban forests” across the country, Tree Canada has “greened” more than 1100 locations since 1992. These events often rely on word of mouth and social connections, as well as tools like poster and brochure printing, to get the word out and build popular support.

It is to be hoped that efforts will grow, like the newly planted trees, into a sustainable community.
