North Vancouver art project aims to capture pandemic experience

A new public art instalment in North Vancouver is looking to depict the city’s collective experience of the coronavirus pandemic, and it is looking for help from the public.

The project, called the North Van City Mosaic, is a digital compilation of images sent in from residents of all ages and walks of life. Anyone who lives or works in the city of North Vancouver can submit an image through an online form, which will be printed on a tile and placed in the mosaic. Together, the images will be tinted to create an image of the waterfront.

The mosaic is the brainchild of local artist Sandrine Pelissier and art therapist Sophie Babeanu, with support from the city’s Healthiest Small City Social Resiliency Collective. The organizers encourage people of any artistic ability or experience to submit a piece.

Submissions are encouraged to focus on the pandemic experience, such as social distancing and other changes to public life. They can include drawings, paintings, photography or graphic design. The submissions so far include everything from photographs of masked gatherings to children’s drawings of their favourite characters.

The North Van City Mosaic is available for viewing online now, and it will be open for submissions until at least the fall. Submissions will later be turned into a physical exhibit of tile art, which is to be displayed at a location yet to be determined.
