North Van youth to present city fest

This May will see the return of a long-running North Vancouver event aimed at local youth, as City Fest comes back for its 2023 edition, marketed as “for youth, by youth.”

The annual festival is hosted by the City of North Vancouver in coordination with local businesses and youth organizations, to coincide with British Columbia’s Youth Week. The event typically features hundreds of youth performers in a variety of media including dance, drama, and film. Previous events have featured dedicated stages for bands and solo musical performers. The festival setting also features food trucks from local vendors and public art installations.

The festival was first held in 2002 as a way to mark the opening of the Centennial Skate Park and has grown over the years with the help of youth volunteers. One of the biggest attractions of City Fest is skateboarding, with festival grounds featuring a dedicated skate park with free-standing ramps and other park features installed. Events include a longboard race and a skateboard competition, which boasts of being the largest in the Metro Vancouver area.

Youth are involved at all aspects of the festival, from creating designs for poster printing to performing on-stage, creating an environment that provides young artists and athletes with a stage on which to show their work.

The 2023 CityFest will take place on May 6 at the North Vancouver Shipyards.
