Just for Laughs gives Vancouver its own comedy spectacular

The second annual JFL Northwest, Vancouver’s local version of the famed Just for Laughs comedy festival, looks to bring some of stand-up comedy’s biggest stars to British Columbia next month.

The festival will feature emerging comedians, well-known stars of TV and film, live podcasts, improv and sketch comedy, and experimental shows with titles like ‘Weird Owl Karaoke’. Those with an offbeat sense of humour from surrounding cities like North Vancouver and Burnaby, and perhaps further afield, will be drawn to the festival.

The festival will take place this February across a variety of venues both large and small. Headline guests include Aziz Ansari, known for starring in shows like Parks & Recreation and Master of None; veteran Canadian television star Howie Mandel; and fiery political comedian Michelle Wolf. Other stars include Gabriel Iglesias, Ken Jeong, and Whitney Cummings. There will also be an accompanying film festival highlighting the best in cinematic comedy.

Stand-up comedy is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity due to the emergence of podcasts, as well as the heavy promotion of comedy specials by platforms such as Netflix. Comedians, especially those still on the local or regional level, still spend a lot of time pounding the pavement, however, using flyer and poster printing to get their names out there.

The event runs from February 14 to 23.
