The Blackout Theater company will be presenting its new play ‘Zoning Out’ in North Vancouver, although the premiere will come a little later than first planned.
Zoning Out tells the story of an Iranian single mother who immigrates to Canada, and has to adapt to her child being diagnosed as on the autism spectrum. The first 30 minutes of the play were previewed last May, allowing writer and director Amir N. Hosseini to receive audience feedback as the team continued to develop the full project. Actors include Amir Naeim, Soha Sanajou, Mahshar Emami and Ali Entezari.
Drawing its name from the saying “Life is a stage between two blackouts”, Blackout Theater draws its rooted in both the Vancouver area’s rich theatre scene and its local Persian community. The company performs shows in both Persian and English, with Zoning Out falling into the latter category. Local plays, often advertised through flyer printing, can address smaller linguistic communities and subcultures.
The full version of Zoning Out was originally set to premiere with a five-day run at the Presentation House Theatre from April 28 to May 2, but this has been postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 Crisis. Blackout aims to reschedule as soon as is feasible, and in the meantime has been hosting virtual rehearsals and posting clips on its Facebook page.
