Some students from the Edmonton area will soon be on their way to the trip of a lifetime, thanks to the fundraising efforts of their parents and a number of generous benefactors.
About 80 grade five and six students had planned an eight-day trip where they would travel to Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City, with a stop at the Space Camp in Laval. However, the tour company they had originally contracted with to plan the trip closed its doorsand it looked like the trip would have to be canceled.
The children’s parents were not about to let that happen; they got together to make sure the kids would not miss out on their trip, forming ‘Save Our Space Camp’ and launching their fundraising efforts.
Working with a tour company form Quebec, they managed to reduce the cost of the trip to $130,000.
Word got out, and they received a number of donations. Melcor Developments and its business partners donated $50,000, while the international group Student Youth Travel Association contributed $15,000.
So far, $115,000 has been collected, and with the upcoming bottle drives, barbeques, comedy show, and silent auction, the group is confident that the goal will be reached.
