Edmonton investigating making it easier for brew pubs to set up shop

The city of Edmonton may soon be a much more welcoming place for those who are thinking of setting up a craft brewery.

Under the current system, it can be somewhat difficult for those who are interested in starting up their own craft beer enterprise. Many who plan on setting doing so would like to use the brew pub model, where the beer is brewed on site with an adjacent tasting pub. According to Wayne Sheridan, who owns a craft beer making business in Edmonton, the bylaws, as they exist now, make it a challenge to open this type of establishment anywhere that has not been zoned for industrial use.

The city council feels that changing the policies will make it possible for brew pubs to open their doors in areas where the public goes to enjoy an evening out. It plans on holding public hearings over the summer to gather more information before developing a new set of bylaws in the fall. Enterprises such as this can provide spin off benefits for other businesses, including Print companies, which can be called upon to provide it with items like custom Drinkware, signage, business Forms and more.

More details about the current zoning system in use in Edmonton, as well as information about its government in general, can be found on the City of Edmonton website.
