River City Chickens wants to help locals decide if keeping a flock is a good idea for them, and has prepared a workshop that explores the benefits of raising poultry in an urban or suburban area.
During “Chickens 101”, the public can learn about the practice of raising chickens in a backyard or other setting. The topic will be discussed from coop design on up, and the participants can discover how they can raise poultry in a “neighbour friendly” manner.
The facilitator of the function will explore the various regulations that address backyard animal husbandry, and federal, provincial and municipal laws and policies will all be covered. The participants will also learn how to choose the right coop for their space, how to feed and water their flock, how to care for their birds during the winter, and how to choose the breed that best fits their needs and space.
Along with learning how to care for their chickens, the group will be taught ways they can make their flock welcome in their neighborhood. They will find out how they can control vermin, keep the noise levels low and dispose of waste properly. Equipping each of the learners with promotional Pens, a notebook and a training manual can help them to learn as much as they can from a session like this.
This opportunity to discover the joys of raising backyard chickens will be offered on November 8. It is scheduled to be held at 7515 118 Ave NW in Edmonton.
