Camrose’s Mirror Lake recently played host to an event that participants a chance to enjoy some time with friends in the great outdoors, while raising money to help others.
The 2015 Open Minds Walk and Run, which was organized by the schizophrenia Society of Alberta (SSA) is the largest fundraiser of the year for the organization, but it does more than that. It also helps to increase awareness in the public about schizophrenia, which is a mental illness that affects one out of every 100 Canadians. The SAA website notes that it can have ‘major impacts on an individual’s thought processes, cognitive abilities and behaviours”.
Each person who took part paid a $40 fee to register, and received a t-shirt and was treated to both breakfast and lunch. A company that produces ad specialties can create these T-Shirts, as well as any other printed items that can help to make an event like this a success.
People could choose between different lengths of walks or runs, and there was also musical entertainment, a presentation of medals, a 50/ 50 draw, and a silent auction. Prizes were awarded for best team costumes and also for the team that collected the most donations. Anyone who raised more than $500 was given a gift card form Save on Foods.
The 2014 event raised $6,000, and according to the SAA, they hoped this year would be just as much of a success.
