A farm near Camrose has been testing out a new cattle forage crop throughout 2015, and according to the reports, it has proven to be a success.
The blend was
being grown on a trial basis by a group of five partners on a 50-acre field where 150 head of cattle were going to be pastured. The plants in the mix included legumes, clover, grasses, and also varieties of brassica that are tasty to cattle. The mixture had been developed by Union Forage, as part of their research efforts into finding the most productive seed mix possible.
The farmers chose the forage blend because they wanted to be able to get the most form their parcels of land. A representative of Union Forage, Graeme Finn, noted that this was one of their special mixtures that can help cattle to grow quickly and also improve the sol in which it is planted. A variety of marketing methods, including promotional Pens, can be used to help market the blend to cattle operations.
The seeds were broadcast seeded in one portion of the field and seed drilled in another. Both did well, and the drilled portion proved to be especially productive. The group noted that they plan on growing 100 acres of land with the mixture in 2016.
The farm, which raises cattle for the specialty natural beef market, supplies the Ontario-based company One Earth Farm with free-range beef that is antibiotic and hormone free. Get a Free Quote for Pens
