Calgary class benefits bats

Though often silent and unseen, bats play an important role in their ecosystem, and a Calgary activity will give the public a chance to get to know these furry night Flyers a little bit better.

WCS Canada’s Alberta Community Bat Program’s Susan Holroyd will be sharing her love of these creatures when she facilitates the “Bats and the Weaselhead” walking workshop. It will include the uses of the senses of sight and sound, and everyone will learn more about the initiative and the work it's doing in the city.

The participant will use the equipment provided to listen for the sounds bats use for echolocation so they can hunt and navigate in the dark, and before they head outdoors, there will be information provided about them, their life cycle and the threats they face in an urban environment. The goal is to help the public develop a deeper appreciation and desire to protect bats from the threats they face.

Learning about wildlife can be both fun and educational. Copies of any handouts as well as small, themed promotional products such as stickers and be prepared for an activity by a local brochure printing company.

This chance to get the inside scoop on Calgary's night side and one of the creatures that calls it home is scheduled for August 27th. It will begin at 7:30 pm at Weaselhead Flats.
