Welcome enhancements coming to Calgary transit

Those who use the Calgary public transit system will soon see some welcome changes.

If council has its way, the current system of buses and the C train will see the largest increase in its route frequency for the past several years beginning in 2014. Part of the reason for this is that they received $11.25 million more in revenue than expected.

The proposed expansion will be centered around three areas. These include hiring more drivers and transit peace officers, hiring more mechanics and response staff and also increasing the number of counter staff at their customer service centers.

The enhancements will allow for more buses on the routes that receive the heaviest usage, more evening feeder buses, and an expansion of the current system into the rapidly growing suburbs that currently receive either inadequate service or none at all.

The total number of services hours will increase by 55,000 more than the 15,800 that have already been proposed for the upcoming year.

Those who purchase a monthly pass may notice a slight increase in their cost. It will rise by $2.00 for adults and $2.50 for students. The cash fare will remain the same.

Businesses who advertise their products and services on the buses and trains will now have more of a chance to do so. Companies that perform poster printing services or who create other Forms of visual Print advertising can take good advantage of this opportunity.

The council will meet near the end of November to approve the draft budget containing these proposed changes to the transit service.
