Suncor employees mark blood donation milestone

The staff at a sustainable energy firm in Calgary have been celebrating after surpassing their annual blood donations target.

In 2008, Suncor joined the ‘Partners for Life’ program, which is run by the Canadian Blood Services. The idea is that employees pledge to donate a certain amount of blood over the course of the year. The workers at the firm gave, in total, 700 units – breaking their previous record.

Since deciding to take part, the staff and management have made more than 3,050 donations, and while this is definitely something to be proud of, it is only a fraction of what the Canadian Blood Services needs every year to meet the needs of the sick and injured. For example, a person battling leukemia may need as many as eight donations each week.

Suncor helps by making it as easy as possible for people to sign up. It hosts several clinics throughout the year and provides shuttle services to different centers around the city. The company also holds a launch celebration each year, during which it announces its annual pledge.

For its efforts, the company has been presented with the Our Life Blood Award.

There are more than 470 Alberta businesses which are involved in the Partners for Life scheme, accounting for 20% of all of the blood that is collected. Print companies have a big role to play in the success of campaigns of this type. They can produce printed advertising materials to raise awareness in the community effectively.
