New times for Calgarys school and playground zones

September marks the beginning of a new school year and, for Calgary drivers, this meant a change in the times when they will need to reduce their speed in school and playground zones.

Formerly, the speed at which vehicles could pass through these areas was 30km per hour, from 7:30am until one hour after sunset – a fact that many drivers complained made the rules unclear.

Under the new bylaws, the speed will still be 30km per hour, but the times will be set from 7:30am until 9:00pm in both school and playground zones. This new policy was decided upon after consulting with driver advocacy groups, educators, and other municipalities to see what worked well for them.

It is felt that the change will provide consistency and make it harder to forget to drive more slowly.

The update will affect Calgary’s 180 school zones, as well as its 1510 playground zones. For now, the signage will be changed on 5,000 through the use of stickers at a cost of $157,000.

The second phase of the plan will be completed next year, when the school zone Signs will be changed to the ones used at playgrounds.

For this update to be successful, it will require the awareness and cooperation of drivers. Brochure printers can create informative promotional materials that will let them know about the change.
