The residents of Calgary have shown their community spirit by helping a local woman replace her stolen car.
While single mom Denise Walker was dealt a tough blow when her car was taken, the ordeal was made worse by the fact that all of the holiday gifts for her five year old son had been stowed in the trunk, so he’d be surprised on Christmas morning.
She reported the theft of her dark green 2007 Pontiac G6 to the police, but knowing how hard it can be to retrieve a stolen car, she wanted to ask the public for help in locating it. She told her story to a local newspaper, and it was then shared with the city.
Donations soon began rolling in, with a particularly large sum coming from the Gary Forbes Secret Wish Program. This is a year-round fundraising initiative, which was started by local radio personality Gary Forbes. Its goal is to help families and people in need.
Ms Walker was stunned and delighted by the public’s response, and noted how it goes to show that there are an awful lot of kind and caring people out there who have helped to give her and her son a wonderful Christmas.
According to police, the car still has not been found. It was, however, insured.
