Calgary to celebrate local delicacy

One of Canada’s signature dishes is poutine, and this year, Calgarians are invited to come out and sample some of the individual ideas local restaurants will have come up with for this well-loved taste treat.

Last year, at least 50 eateries participated in Calgary Poutine Week, with offerings of the fries, gravy and cheese dish that ranged from the classic to much more offbeat. It was so popular that, over a span of seven days, 5,000 helpings were served. This year’s choices promise to be just as varied and appreciated by lovers of the dish.

Although the week will give people an added incentive to try something new, there is also another purpose to it. For every poutine purchased at a participating restaurant, a free meal will be provided to someone who needs it. This is being administered through the not-for-profit group Mealshare. This will be the third year that the event has collaborated with the organization to help the less fortunate as part of its aim for nobody who needs a meal goes hungry. The Calgary Poutine Week will take place from April 15 to 23. Those who would like to find out more about the program are invited to visit its website.
