Calgary teachers rally against public funding cuts

A rally was held by teachers and interested citizens of Calgary recently. Over 350 concerned people took part in the rally regarding cuts to funding of public education, and they protested by displaying printed Signs and Banners appealing against the cuts in education funding.

The Calgary Catholic School District and the Calgary Board of Education have announced that jobs will be lost due to underfunding. The CBE says that over 200 support staff and teachers will need to be laid off, claiming they will still face a $14.4-million shortfall to their budget.

The Calgary Catholic School District is contemplating laying off 90 educators this coming school year.

Due to the cuts, Milica Veljic will no longer be teaching at Olympic Heights School after this school year. For the past three years, Veljic has been a grade three teacher at Olympic Heights School.

Veljic said:
“There are seven of us who have to leave.”

“I still have to go to work for the next two months and act like nothing has happened for the good of my kids. This can’t affect what we do with them.”

Veljic also noted that the larger student enrolment, larger class sizes and loss of teaching assistants and specialized teachers will have a long-term effect on education.

A four-year old boy was carrying a sign that said “invest in me”.
