Many Calgary residents feel that, when it comes to sports, their city is among the top places in the world – and they may soon have proof of their belief.
Sport Business Magazine is an international publication geared at those in the sporting and tourism industry. Every two years, it presents its Ultimate Sports City award, and this year, Calgary has earned a spot among the top five finalists.
The others in the running are London, Melbourne, Copenhagen and Auckland. It is the first time Calgary has made the cut.
The communities are ranked according to many different factors, including their public support for sporting events, security, venues, event strategy, and overall quality of life.
According to Tourism Calgary, the high ranking is a reflection of the value it places on sport and living an active lifestyle. The city not only plays host to the Calgary Stampede and the events at Spruce Meadows, but it is also a stop on the PGA Tour and Tour of Alberta Bike Race.
The top city will be announced at Sport Accord International Convention, to be held in April in Antalya, Turkey.
Even placing in the final five is great news, as this makes the area very attractive to tourists and those wishing to hold large sporting events. Companies that provide printing services have a role to play, producing promotional materials that let the rest of the world understand how, when it comes to sport, Calgary is the place to be.
