Calgary resident to be recognized with national award

A woman from Calgary has shown just how much of a difference having a creative voice can make for those who live marginalized form the rest of society, and she will be receiving a national award for her efforts.

Wendy Lees, operator of the ‘create!’ studio housed in a donated workspace at the Golden Age Club, helps seniors and people living below the poverty line to express themselves through artistic workshops, which she holds four times a week. She got the idea when she was a volunteer at the Mustard Seed Shelter and Outreach Center.

Using a mixture of her own funds, donations from her friends and family, and a small grant, Lees set up her program and people have been flocking to it ever since.

For her efforts, she was among the shortlist of 350 people nominated from across the country to receive an Everyday Political Citizen of the Year award, and she was selected as the winner. The prize recognizes the contributions of an individual who makes an exceptional and outstanding effort to help their community.

An award like this can mean so much to the person who receives it, as it is a tangible sign that their efforts are helping others. A Stationery printing firm can create special award certificates to be presented to the recipient, which will further acknowledge and celebrate their contribution to the wellbeing of others in the area.
