A Calgary man and his girlfriend were out running errands recently when something happened that changed him from an ordinary man into a hero.

Stuart Harris was driving by a park when he saw a woman crash through the ice on a frozen pond. He realized what had happened and made a quick turn so he could help.

Having taken several wilderness survival courses, he knew what to do. He grabbed the tow rope from the back of his track, made a loop on the end and raced to the ice. Once he got there, he eased himself out until he was able to get the rope to the lady in trouble. He told her to put the loop under her arms so he could pull her to safety.

In the meantime, two police officers had arrived and they worked together to free Jennifer Simmonds. She had accidentally broken through the ice while trying to rescue two of her dogs, which had fallen in after chasing the ducks across the frozen pond.

In the end, everyone made it to safety. Simmonds was taken to the hospital and the dogs were fine.

A representative from the police department commended the two officers for their valor, and noted that Harris’s actions were nothing short of heroic. For his part, Harris remarked that he was “glad to have been of help and to be of service”.
