If things go as planned, Calgary may soon be using federal dollars to help upgrade the infrastructure of its transit system.
The city is planning to improve its fleet by purchasing buses that run on natural gas. It is currently concluding a year-long test run of the new vehicles, making sure that they can withstand the harsh Calgary climate and altitude. So far, the test has proven a success.
The city would like to purchase up to 400 of them to help replace its current fleet of diesel-fueled buses. The new ones would be more energy efficient and cheaper to operate.
The federal funds could amount to as much as $60 million, and this would help to offset the $241 million dollars it would cost to build a new garage in North Calgary that would service the vehicles. This is part of a 10-year plan to upgrade the system.
The current diesel buses will continue to be serviced at the existing two maintenance facilities.
The money will come from P3 Canada, which is a program that seeks to build and improve infrastructure through partnerships between the private and public sector.
