Firefighters in Calgary were recently called to rescue a young cat that became lost in the duct work of its owner’s home, showing that they’re ready to tackle any job, big or small.

Foster owner Julie Lundell called for help after the seven week old kitten wandered into an open heating duct and couldn’t find its way back out. Six firefighters arrived at the home to search for the feline, but when they couldn’t locate him, they put in a call to the more specialized crew, who were able to use technical rescue equipment in their search.

The firemen used a flexible camera that they fed down into the pipe and performed a thorough search. They finally found the cat in the very last duct that they checked. He was frightened and confused, but otherwise fine. Nicknamed ‘Swiffer’, because of the unintentional cleaning job that he gave to the duct work, the tabby now knows to say away from the vents.

Swiffer is just one of many abandoned pets staying in foster care while waiting for a permanent home. The Humane Society uses materials produced by Print companies to help spread the word about the animals that are waiting. Ms Lundell was looking after Swiffer after he had been found abandoned. She regularly fosters animals for the Calgary Humane Society, but this is the first time anything like this has ever happened.

She said after the incident that she is very grateful to the fire crews for taking the time to perform the rescue operation and is very impressed at how much care and concern they showed for the kitten.
