What's Happening in Calgary, AB…

Calgary class covers seeds saving

Whether they are interested in creating their own cultivar, care about sustainability or are gardening on a budget, a Calgary workshop is set to offer its gardeners a helping hand.

Late August will see the Calgary Horticultural Society host its "Seed to Table: Seed-Saving workshop offered, and it will pack a lot of learning into a small amount of time. A sit will be offered online, attendees can participate for the comfort of their own home, and a link will be provided upon registration.

The session will introduce the practice of seed saving, including why it can be important. Those who are new to the practice may appreciate learning which ones tend to be the easiest to work with, while those who are looking for a challenge will find out which species require special storage conditions and treatments to germinate. Tips for harvesting, including when to do so, will be provided, and there will be other information on the syllabus as well. Joanna Tschudy will be the facilitator for the activity.

Seed saving has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it may not be as difficult as some might think. Tips sheets, especially printed paper envelopes for storing seeds and other materials for an activity can be ordered from area stationery printers.

This introduction to the art and science of selecting, harvesting and storing seeds is scheduled for August 26th. The registration process can be completed through the organizer's website.
