Upcoming festival celebrates anime

Otafest is taking place for three days next month in Calgary.

The event is a Japanese culture and animation festival likely to attract a good number of fans. The festival is set to feature several guest stars, among them voice actors, animators and artists. Guest stars this year include Matthew Mercer and Leah Clark.

There will be autograph sessions and photograph opportunities with the guests, as well as panel discussions.

Other activities are set to include video game tournaments, Pokémon League meetings and musical performances. Guests can also visit the Maid and Butler Café where serving staff will be dressed as anime characters and other popular Japanese figures.

A popular part of the festival will likely be the vendor hall. It will feature a large number of vendors selling items such as comic Books, DVDs, action figures and clothing. There will also be an Artists’ Alley where guests can view and purchase unique works of art.

Calgary flyer printing companies may be asked to provide marketing materials to be distributed in the city.

Ticket prices vary; they will cost $35 on the Friday or Saturday and $25 on the Sunday. Three-day passes are available for adults for $55 in advance or $60 at the door and $10 for children between the ages of 6 and 12.

Otafest will be held at the Calgary Telus Convention Centre from May 18 to 20. For the most current information, visit the official event website.
