Clean up of Calgary site well underway

The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation has made a commitment to clean up a contaminated site in West Village so it can be developed, and two firms have been shortlisted for the job.

According to the CMLC’s president Michael Brown, the goal is for the team that will be working on the project, as well as their work plan, to be established by the end of September. He further noted that in this type of situation, a team approach is the way to go as it pulls together the best people to get the job done.

The references of the two firms in the running are currently being checked, and the successful candidate will be chosen using a series of benchmarks that have been determined. Mr. Brown remarked that the company that is chosen will have the next six months to determine what level of remediation will be needed in order to clean up the site. Once that is done, a catalog printing company will be able to produce Copies of their report.

The location, which was contaminated by creosote produced by a plant that was located there from the 1920s until the 1960s, was found in the 1980s to have the substance permeating several meters into the ground below the bedrock. It was also discovered to be in the Bow River. Alberta Environment has been monitoring the situation, and note that it has been slow to spread.
