Calgary city council is one step closer to the construction of a 40 kilometer-long light rail transit system (LRT), which will run south to north.
The members agreed to look into the feasibility of the $5.2m project and whether it would be a better choice than implementing a bus rapid transit system. According to one of the councilors, part of their decision to investigate this option was the federal government’s plan to provide funding for LRT-based systems over bus ones.
The investigation will take place over the next few months, with the final report to be presented to council in December. A printing company will be able to prepare Copies of the final report to be distributed to any community stakeholders, as well as others who may be interested in reading it for themselves.
The councilors reportedly felt that the line would be built in a series of phases, as doing it all in one go would prove to be too expensive. They also believed that having it run north to south would utilize a route where there will be assured ridership.
If the project goes ahead as planned, it will be the most expensive capital project that the city has ever undertaken. Councilor Shaun Keating commented that having the study done will ensure that Calgary will be able to go ahead once it receives the potential government funding.Get a Free Quote for Copies
