Calgary symposium celebrates role of beavers

Beavers are often considered to be one of the animal world’s top engineers, and they once played a significant role in the changing the landscape. A movement is underway to help bring them back, and a Calgary symposium will be exploring the benefits of doing so.

The organizers of “Putting Beavers to Work for Watershed Resiliency and Restoration” believe that these large aquatic rodents and humans can coexist in a way that benefits both species and many others as well. They will bring a variety of stakeholders together to discuss the subject, and the focus will be on both Alberta and further afield as well.

Through videos, presentations and even on site tours, the attendees in the symposium will discover first-hand the role beavers and the ponds they make can have. They create living space for many species, help to mediate drought, and can be an important factor in maintaining overall watershed health.

The schedule for the two-long event includes mixers, bus tours, a screening of “Beaver Believers” and many other activities, and the cost to register for the symposium is $120. Swag, including an assortment of promotional Pens, for an occasion like this can readily be obtained from a local Print shop.

This opportunity for stakeholders to explore the benefits of inviting beavers into the landscape will be held during October 23 and 24. The presentations and screening will be held at 4825 Mount Royal Gate Southwest, and the tour will make several stops throughout the area.
