Calgary residents lend a hand to make childrens lives better

Children in need around the world will soon find their lives a little bit brighter thanks to the efforts of some Calgary residents.

Operation Christmas Child fills shoeboxes with a variety of necessities and a few fun things that are then delivered to underprivileged kids in South and Central America and Africa. This project has been undertaken for the past 22 years, and over 100 million of them have been handed out.

Each box contains an assortment of items, including hygiene supplies, school supplies and toys. These are packed by a group of volunteers, and they are then gathered for distribution.

According to Randy Crosson, one of the organizers for the event, he has spoken with people who were the recipient one of the Boxes when they were a child, and they remarked that it changed their view of the world, as it showed that there are people, even though they are far away, who still cared enough to try and help them. Postcards printed with a positive message can be included in every box to further let the person who will receive it know that people are thinking of them and want to help make their lives better.

This year, across Canada, over 700,000 of the filled shoeboxes were donated. Anyone who would like to fill one online can do so by visiting the PackaBox website.
