Wangara to be made available to families and children in need

Wheelchairs are to be provided to families who have children with disabilities in a joint effort between Perth-based charity Wheelchairs for Kids and Port Headland PATCHES Paediatrics.

The wheelchairs are made locally at the Wangara warehouse, where Wheelchairs for Kids has made and donated 40,500 wheelchairs. These have been distributed to children all over the world and are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Scarborough, Western Australia. The Rotary Club has its own Logo Design which is well-known across the country.

Volunteer Jenny Price said that the design of the chairs provides more support than traditional wheelchairs, with postural support and head rests, and are particularly useful for children who have cerebral palsy and need the extra support.

Stephen Dawson, the Minister for Disability Services, said that the wheelchairs would be particularly beneficial to those families who live in the Pilbara region. He said many families travel within the remote region and that the sturdiness of the chairs would be better suited to the harsh terrain.

Dawson also said that there was a waiting list for those children who needed to be fitted for a wheelchair and then a further wait to gain access to that chair. He said that having access to the chairs would make an immediate and positive impact on families.
