With over 300 members, the Joondalup club is the sixth largest in Western Australia. A total of 62% of members live in the City of Joondalup, with the cities of Stirling and Wanneroo, which includes Wangara, making up the balance in equal parts.
The club attracts members aged anywhere from their 20s to 90s. Retirees are strongly represented at the club, with members like Magda Lawe finding their way back to bridge after an absence while raising their family. Lawe has been successful in competition play at state level, but she says it is the club’s social side, as well as the mental challenge of bridge, that attracts her to the game. Bridge is played as two competing partnerships, and Lawe believes communication is the key to a successful pairing:
“You are playing in pairs opposite your partner and you have to create communication in very few words.”
Bridge has reportedly been a popular pastime for a range of famous people, including Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Mahatma Ghandi and Winston Churchill. While player numbers have been declining in Australia, Joondalup Bridge Club is bucking that trend. Local clubs such as this can benefit from poster printing, as Posters displayed in community locations can attract the notice of potential members.
For interested newcomers, the club’s next session of beginner lessons commences on 15 September.
