Residents seek quick action for welfare of kangaroos

One of Australia most recognised animals is the focus of a Ministerial intervention being sought by the City of Wanneroo.

Acting on behalf of concerned residents in Yanchep, Wangara and surrounding areas, the city is facilitating talks between Yanchep Sun City Country Club, Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW), and responsible organisations to come up with a solution to movement of the kangaroo population into public areas.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the kangaroos had tended to migrate from their familiar habitat in the National Park to the adjacent golf course and through into residential areas and public open space.

This, she said, had resulted in the animals becoming landlocked, causing issues of overcrowding and putting kangaroos at risk of being hit by cars or attacks by domestic dogs.

Mayor Roberts said the issue was in immediate need of a solution and several steps had already been taken in an effort to alleviate the situation.

These included a request to Sun City Council Club to permit kangaroos into its grounds from both the Yanchep National Park side and the club’s adjacent Saint Andrews Park.

Effective and quick action has already been requested as part of a written submission to the Minister for Environment, Albert Jacob.

Warning Signs alerting local motorists to beware of kangaroos have also been installed throughout the city, and the topic has also been included in community newsletter printing by concerned groups, according to the Mayor.
